Morning journal guide

Morning journal prompts

Twenty-four prompts and a simple five-minute practice to begin the day with gratitude, clarity and an intention that feels true to you.

Begin the day with yourself

I love morning journaling because it lets me begin the day with myself. I write down how I feel, what I am grateful for and what I would love from the day ahead.

Some mornings that may fill a page; other mornings it may be only a few lines. There is no right length and nothing you have to work out. The point is simply to enjoy the time and listen to yourself.

Choose the question you feel like answering that morning. You can stay with it for a few minutes or keep writing for longer if you want to.

Morning gratitude prompts

Begin with what is already good. Let your answers be simple, specific and true to this morning.

  • · What am I grateful to wake up to today?
  • · Which part of my life feels especially beautiful right now?
  • · Who brings love, warmth or support into my life?
  • · What did yesterday give me that I want to remember?
  • · Which simple pleasure can I enjoy today?
  • · What am I proud to have created, chosen or become?

Prompts for setting an intention

An intention is not another task. It is a way of choosing the energy and meaning you want to bring into your day.

  • · How do I want to feel today?
  • · What energy do I want to bring into the day?
  • · What would I love to make space for today?
  • · How can I show up for myself today?
  • · What would make today feel meaningful?
  • · Which word do I want to carry with me today?

Prompts for clarity and focus

Come back to what matters to you. One clear choice can give the whole day a sense of direction.

  • · What matters most to me today?
  • · Which one action will bring me closer to a dream?
  • · Where would I love to place my attention?
  • · How can I make today feel more spacious?
  • · What am I ready to say yes to today?
  • · What would I love to have experienced by this evening?

Prompts for confidence and self-trust

Let your first words of the day remind you of your own strength, wisdom and possibility.

  • · What do I already know is right for me?
  • · Which part of myself would I love to express more freely?
  • · Which recent choice am I proud of?
  • · What strength will support me today?
  • · Which kind words do I want to hear from myself this morning?
  • · What am I looking forward to?

A morning practice to make your own

Use this as a starting point, not a schedule. You can follow every step, choose only one or write about something completely different.

  1. Begin with yourself. Write how you feel this morning.
  2. Notice what is good. Write three things you are grateful for.
  3. Choose a question. Pick one prompt and answer it in your own words.
  4. Set an intention. Finish with an intention for the day ahead.

Some mornings this may take only a few minutes. Other mornings you may want to stay longer. There is no need to watch the clock or finish every step. Let it be something you enjoy, not another task to complete.

If you miss a morning, simply come back whenever you feel like writing again.
